Max Coleman, aka Oak Bloak, is an illustrator and painter from Denver, Colorado. His mural for London Mural Festival 2024 is his first in the city!
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Max’s work challenges classical conceptions of beauty, exploring nature, the human condition, mythology, and spirituality. In recent years, his studio practice has garnered attention for exploring these same themes through animal portraiture. Through the use of bright colour and massive scale, his murals create spaces for thought and introspection, where viewers can engage with deeper parts of themselves.
“My work for London Mural Festival explores the myth of The Three Graces but instead uses three animal species that humanity heavily relies on. A cow for nourishment, a hound dog for protection, and a sheep for clothing. These Baroque-style figures at the Fenwick Estate provide an interactive space for contemplation and introspection. I am so pleased the festival gave me the opportunity to make this series a reality. I encourage you to experience them for yourself and reflect on our relationships with these creatures and how our lives are intertwined with theirs.”
